No time like the present

For the first time in approximately 16 weeks, I have had the opportunity to spend HOURS at leisurely internet this afternoon.  And!  To get paid for it.

Life has been full, full, full, full lately.  Right now I'm here to say I love it, but that could be the coffee talking.  Bulleted briefs, in no particular order:
.  Project Neighborhood in Creston:  We are HARD at WORK.  It is so, so exciting.  Have you ever worked on  a dream for two years without knowing if it would come true?  Seeing it come to fruition is beautiful.  But, lest I get ahead of myself, there is a ton more to do.  Thank God for a group of Entrada volunteers this morning.  They attacked the kitchen's drop ceiling and the ugly paneling in the entry way.  It's amazing how much the demolition made me feel like we were getting somewhere.  I know, I know; the cynics will tell me that putting it back together is the hard part.  I think God will provide for that, too, though.

.  Work:  What to say but that I'm back at it?  I feel like I spend almost as much time scheduling childcare as at the office, but...what can ya do?

.  speaking of... JONAH:  He's great.  I love him.  He's sleeping well, eating well, smiling, cooing.  You know, he cries sometimes too, but it mostly serves as an invitation to cuddle him.  His favorite activities include going for a walk, kicking his legs and chewing on blankets.

.  Housekeeping:  It's gone out the window a little bit.  I was real good at it for about a week, and then...? Who knows.  We got outta town for a couple days and the house hasn't recovered yet.  But it will get better.  Homemaking, crazy as it may sound, is actually an appealing thing to me for the first time ever.  I'm looking forward to packing us up and clearing out the clutter when it comes time to move.  It will be great to start fresh.

.  Church: We're hosting bi-weekly summer Bible study for the college-aged folk.  I really appreciate the time we have together.  VBS is coming up, too.  I'm looking forward to meeting some kids who live near the house.

Oh, of course, there's probably more to say, but that's enough for now.  I think now that I've re-entered xangaland it won't take so long for my next post. :)

I'm at work tonight trying to make up for lost time due to low levels of daytime concentration, and trying to jump ahead of my body's clock by finishing my work before it's time to call it quits for 8 weeks.

Imminent is the one word that has articulated our coming arrival.  We sure don't know when.  But every day--and now every moment, I feel--brings us closer.

This weekend, Noah and I stole away to Grand Haven for a retreat, an anniversary celebration.  It felt daring to leave Grand Rapids with only one friend aware of our flight.   I have no photographic proof that we were there; the camera battery died as Noah turned it on to take a picture of the beautiful, delicious gourmet breakfast served at our B&B.  It was a delightful, slow weekend.

By now, we've fallen back into the work of the week.  Laundry, doctors appointment, the last childbirth class, billing for me, high school visits and file reading for Noah.  I'm plodding through the ends that must be tied up, mostly waiting to be interrupted by a totally new tasks and a totally new pace of life....

Laundry will be dry in 20 minutes.  What can I finish before then?

baby, it's cold outside

Noah hasn't left the house since Friday night and I haven't left since returning from a meeting turned stilted shopping excursion early yesterday afternoon.  Nothing like 11 inches of snow on the ground to motivate this chica into finally buying boots, but when the 11 inches of snow on the ground plus 40mph winds cause state police to warn folks not to leave the house save matters of life and death, well, not many shoe stores are open.  I did manage to drop off the dry cleaning before coming home.  I also stopped at the library, hoping to retrieve the items on hold for me there which would have promised hours of entertainment this weekend.  Sadly, the library had closed one hour earlier due to the weather.

Having resolved to get by with the many books and dvds already in our house, I was about to leave the parking lot when I noticed an old woman walking down the middle of Plainfield Avenue.   The light behind her had just turned green and traffic was creeping toward her.  "Do you need a ride?" I yelled.  She was using a cane and it seemed she was too disturbed by the elements to realize if she didn't get out of the road soon, the other lane of traffic would uneasily approach her.   It turns out that she lived just a few blocks away, directly on my way home, a distance that would take about 5 minutes for me to walk in good weather, but with two significant hills and a couple corners with poor visibility for drivers to see what's coming up the hill or 'round the corner, it probably could have taken her an hour to walk.  So, she made it to my car, and the trusty Camry made it up the first hill just fine, but turning onto Quimby was a major struggle resulting in foul smells of burning rubber.  Finally, I let the car slide backwards and did a three-point turn back onto Lafayette, going around the block to end up at her house.  It was a little scary.

Strangely, I did run into two old friends during my excursions yesterday.  One I hadn't talked to in a year; one I hadn't seen since she left Calvin about 5 years ago.   Wild.

We've spent the remainder of the weekend holed up in our apartment eating left-overs, crafting, playing spider solitaire, watching news clips on the internet (I'm so delighted we had the impulse to bring N's computer home from work on Friday), calling our geographically scattered family members and friends, playing MasterMind, watching the first season of Lost, reading library books, napping, and we've even done a few chores.

It's been a mild battle with boredom, but when I head back to work tomorrow with temps finding a high in the single digits, I'll long to return to this weekend.

As of this week, it looks like Barak Obama is officially entering the campaign for prez in 2008.  I could become enamored with this rock-star politician, but I feel slightly jaded by engaged citizenry, as it has disappointed me in recent elections.  After giving my heart to candidates solely because they seemed the lesser of undesirables, I'm afraid to open myself to all his knightly qualities and let my crush on Obama flourish.  What if I really, truly fall for him and our political courtship doesn't work out?  I'm not sure I could handle another heartbreak.
