Nothing like 11 inches of snow on the ground to motivate this chica into finally buying boots, but when the 11 inches of snow on the ground plus 40mph winds cause state police to warn folks not to leave the house save matters of life and death, well, not many shoe stores are open. I did manage to drop off the dry cleaning before coming home. I also stopped at the library, hoping to retrieve the items on hold for me there which would have promised hours of entertainment this weekend. Sadly, the library had closed one hour earlier due to the weather.
Having resolved to get by with the many books and dvds already in our house, I was about to leave the parking lot when I noticed an old woman walking down the middle of Plainfield Avenue. The light behind her had just turned green and traffic was creeping toward her. "Do you need a ride?" I yelled. She was using a cane and it seemed she was too disturbed by the elements to realize if she didn't get out of the road soon, the other lane of traffic would uneasily approach her. It turns out that she lived just a few blocks away, directly on my way home, a distance that would take about 5 minutes for me to walk in good weather, but with two significant hills and a couple corners with poor visibility for drivers to see what's coming up the hill or 'round the corner, it probably could have taken her an hour to walk. So, she made it to my car, and the trusty Camry made it up the first hill just fine, but turning onto Quimby was a major struggle resulting in foul smells of burning rubber. Finally, I let the car slide backwards and did a three-point turn back onto Lafayette, going around the block to end up at her house. It was a little scary.
Strangely, I did run into two old friends during my excursions yesterday. One I hadn't talked to in a year; one I hadn't seen since she left Calvin about 5 years ago. Wild.
We've spent the remainder of the weekend holed up in our apartment eating left-overs, crafting, playing spider solitaire, watching news clips on the internet (I'm so delighted we had the impulse to bring N's computer home from work on Friday), calling our geographically scattered family members and friends, playing MasterMind, watching the first season of Lost, reading library books, napping, and we've even done a few chores.
It's been a mild battle with boredom, but when I head back to work tomorrow with temps finding a high in the single digits, I'll long to return to this weekend. |
